In a conversation over 60 years ago Max Ernst said to Jackson Pollack that painting could be as easy as punching a whole in the bottom of a paint can, hanging it on a line and letting it glide across the canvas. Maybe Ernst can take a little credit in influencing Pollack's famous style, although Benton and Hofmann also deserve some as well.
I have used this conversation as the basis for elementary school collaborations with students over the years. This year instead of wasting entire paint cans I invented a mechanism called "Crazy Dave's Anemic Centripetal Line Generator"
The students had a blast and the school decided on hanging the final product in the lobby.
